Libraries!

Happy Monday guys! I just read THE most AMAZING article on Huff post that showed 10 breathtaking libraries from around the world.

Adel Zakout writes:
"...our libraries are being replaced by the internet as a primary research tool by students and book-reading is on the decline. In my opinion we mustn't let libraries slowly disappear from our cultural landscapes; we need to redefine their roles to ensure that they are relevant in providing that kind of entertainment and food for the mind that the digital world never can. So what can we do, from an architectural point of view, to keep libraries alive and most importantly, meaningful?"

Here are some of the fantastic photos:

What do you guys think of these pictures? And do you believe your local library is  making strides to stay current?

  1. I used to spend hours and hours in my local library. I have to be honest and say I haven't really been to mine in years and they've actually built a new one. But I haven't had a need since I started buying most of my books. I'd like to go just out of curiosity though. I love those libraries posted, they're pretty.

    1. Yeah I can totally see how there would be like no need to search through the library if you're getting all new books!! There's definitely this strange book gobbling sensation that comes over me though when there are free books scattered about lol!! You should go take a look at your new library girl!

  2. I think mine stays current by providing numerous activities for the community. You can't have free story time or knitting classes on your kindle.

  3. Hi Lah! Again, I envy you because you have a local library to borrow books from. I think we don't have one here in our community, and that's really sad. Since I love to read, I crave for a a place where I can read and the library is that place. When I was in college, I used to stay at the library all the time and read my eyes out. I really miss those serene moments the library can give me...On the other hand, these pictures are to die for! How I wish I can visit these awesome libraries! It would be heaven on Earth for me! xoxo

    1. Oh my gosh same here! I wish I could go to all these. Where do you go to read? Are there really nice bookstores or cafes with comfy chairs??

    2. Hmmm...mostly, I do my reading at home or during office lunch break. There are I think three major bookstores here in the Philippines and some of them offers a wide variety of books. With regards to the cafes and comfy chairs, I have yet to see a bookstore that offers that...

  4. I really like the last photo...that is just amazing!

And I haven't figured out the following thing, but I am back to getting your posts! What an ordeal lol. I think something happened when you switched your name. It turns out that I've been following you on GFC the whole time, but your posts ceased to be delivered to my Google Reader and in there it sill said Lazy Girl. So I unsubscribed from that and it wasn't in the Blogger Dashboard at all. Then since I'm following via GFC, but I'm not getting your posts, I left that alone and just manually subscribed to your site through Google Reader and voila! So now you should see me around again lol

  5. Those libraries are beautiful. I'm so thankful that my library is part of a multi-county library system, so I have access to just about any book I could think of. I think if libraries want to stay current they need to take a page out of academic/ university libraries, and make comfortable reading environments, with some private spaces. Of course, free wi-fi is a MUST too. And - it wouldn't hurt to have a coffee shop in there too ... wish list!

    1. Oooh definitely a coffee shop! That's so chic and progressive, and hey, everyone loves coffee right?! And yes, the wi-fi has GOT to be going on. Some of the Brooklyn Public Libraries have such slow wi-fi that I just give up on it all together lol.

  6. I'm so jealous of you guys and your libraries. Our library system down here is awful. Reading isn't generally seen as something you can do for pleasure so even our book stores aren't that great. The Kindle has been my best purchase ever.

I'm trying to decided whether to do my masters in Library Science actually! :D I hope our libraries stop sucking by the time I'm done lol. (I'm totally with Tanya on the coffee shop!)
