Book Review: The Boy Next Door by RL Stine

Genre: YA Horror
Paperback, 143 pages
Published: 1996
Borrowed from NYPL Mid-Manhattan Branch

When handsome Scott moves next door and becomes Shadyside High's new football star, Lauren and Crystal go out of their way to attract his attention, unaware that his last girlfriend died under mysterious circumstances.

Ha! This book was so awesome! It's YA for when I was actually well, sort of a YA myself! I could totally see this story on Snick (Nickelodeon used to have a Saturday night special thing they did) or even as a really cheesy and kinda scary Lifetime movie.

The "villian" Scott (whom I shall call Scott the psycho) was almost likeable at first, then he just started to grind my gears. I really wanted to murder him. And gosh, those were some foolish girls living next door to him. I mean, Scott the psycho may've been cute with washboard abs and a strong jawline, but C'MON ladies! All the signs were there. He was a complete nutcase and could barely hide it. I won't give away the story in case you read it.

All in all, I give The Boy Next Door a solid 3 out of 4 stars. I'm glad I didn't read this at night or when I was 13 (when this book came out). So I recommend it to people who love horror, YA and suspense...and of course, RL Stine!

  1. I remember Snick! Isn't that when "Are You Afraid of the Dark" came on? :D

  2. Oh BOY! I remember RL Stine books! They were the best! The library by my house had a ton of them and I was hooked. I think I saved the ones I bought. They're in boxes in my rafters with my Sweet Valley High books waiting for my Emma to get old enough to read them!

  3. Oh my goodness talk about a blast from my past! I read every single RL Stine book that my library had - then I got a little sad because I didn't know what to read next! Delphyne is right that is when Are You Afraid of the Dark came on. Awesome post! :)
