Book Review: A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch by Jill Murphy

Published: Candlewick Press, 1983
Paperback, 130 pages
Genre: Middle Grade/Fantasy, Magic
Borrowed from Grand Army Plaza Library
Challenge: Hogwarts Challenge, 100 Books in a Year Challenge
Mildred's good intentions in the second year are upset when she finds that Miss Hardbroom is to be her form teacher again. She clashes once again with Ethel who turns her into a frog, whilst later on she rescues an enchanted magician.

Mildred kidnaps a girl, ties her up and steals her close so she can help her froggy friend turn back into a real person.

There, now that I've ruined the story for you, I'd like to say how disappointed I am with this book! I normally love The Worst Witch series but this one was so odd! All our friends are back, Ethel, Mildred, the cat, her friends, Miss Hardbroom. And not only did I not root for Mildred the entire time, I actually, sided with Ethel for turning her into a frog in the first place! I don't even like Ethel!!

Mildred is known for getting into trouble but meaning well. She might've gone way too far this time. I might be being overly sensitive because it's an MG book but I wouldn't want my kid getting any ideas from the stuff she does in this book! And I don't even have kids!

Anyway, maybe I need to read the next book to see what Mildred's deal was in this one. I give this book 2.5 out of 4 stars. Totally skip it!

  1. Aw, too bad! Hopefully the next one will be better and more in line with the other books in the series.
