Where are the other genres??

Other genres beside YA anyone? ...Anyone?
I'd say about 75% of the bloggers I know and love are fans of YA fiction. Seriously, you guys are representin'!! Prior to book blogging, I hadn't read much YA and figured I'd try it out.
I've read some pretty excellent ones (um, hello Dash & Lily, The Hate List & The Hunger Games) and others that many people loved and I... absolutely hated! So much so, that I felt bad writing negative reviews about these books. I didn't want anyone to think I was insulting their taste! What's a LazyGirl to do?!

My favorite genre is Mystery. Always has been, always will be. I also love Fantasy. I could go for General Fiction just about any day of the week. In fact, I'd read (and be entertained by) an Adult fiction mystery that was mediocre but would hate a mediocre YA book.

So I suppose my question is: who reviews other genres? Who reads Patterson, Dan Brown, Sidney Sheldon, Janet Evanovich, Iris Johansen etc.?! I'm leaving a ton of authors & genres out out but those were the first that come to mind. WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?? I would LOVE to read your reviews as I'm always looking for some tantalizing thrillers and gorgeous fantasies! I'm not limiting it to these genres, just anything other than YA.

Please link yourself up to this linky with your genre(s)! Leave a comment below with thoughts/suggestions etc. This post was in NO WAY meant to offend anyone who is strictly YA, I obviously love you all & think you are all very pretty!! Just looking for the more under-represented folks in the blogosphere!

  1. I am with you! Since joining the blogging world earlier this year I have been absolutely amazed by the number of YA readers and have been surprised to find I struggle to find bloggers with similar tastes to my own. Count me in as a link to anything but YA!! I'm just so glad to know I'm not the only one, but ditto, no offence to YA readers.

  2. Well, if you like mystery, you could visit Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise. She's a mystery lover.

My taste is more eclectic, these days I read a lot YA but I often read MG and Adult too. My favorites genres still mystery and fantasy. You can see in my blog (the one I reviewed because the other two are YA lovers)

  3. I read just about anything and everything - mystery, thriller, Adult fiction, Christian Fiction, non-fiction, YA too. It's never the same from week to week with me. Come see for yourself:

  4. I started book blogging only a few months ago and I am still surprised at the number of YA readers. I stopped going to the teen section of Barnes and Noble and moved to the fiction/literature section sometime in Middle School and just figured that's what everyone else did. Obviously, people can read whatever they like, I just didn't realize the prevalence of YA.

I don't have tons of books up on my blog, but feel free to stop by and look. I read a big mix- Classics, Chronicles of Narnia, several non-fiction, adult fiction...

  6. I started my blog to review mostly Horror. However, because I met so many other YA bloggers online, they got me excited to read some YA books. I'm glad I found this genre again, but yeah, I soooo need my horror and realized I was really straying from my original vision. Therefore, I've been really searching for horror book blogs and have been able to find some mostly through Twitter.

Another good way to find adult book blog and more eclectic book blogs is through Hops...I've found a lot of blogs that match my interest via the Blog Hop on Crazy For Books and if you just scroll through Twitter, you can find other hops.

    GREAT discussion Lazy Girl.

  8. Thought I was the only one out there not in love with YA. I'm a teacher and read YA at and for work, so I would rather read other genres in my free time. It would be great if we could find more of us.

  9. I think this is a fabolous idea. I continue to participate in follow friday because right now I'm looking for blogs that aren't mostly YA. I have nothing against YA but I rarely read it. I just want to balance out my Google Reader list because I'm not as interested in YA.

P.S. I just reviewed a book by Linda Howard and Linda Jones

  10. I definitely review a good amount of adult books mostly Sci-Fi/Fantasy flavor. I'm not a fan of mysteries/thrillers though.

I agree, there are some great YA books, but also a lot that people rave about and I just think are bad (City of Bones >.>).

  11. I read everything, mystery is my fave, but memoirs, history, sports, autos, some YA, everything. I'm always shocked at the # of 40ish women still reading teen books. Ugh!

  12. I agree with you! I've always read ya, but before I started blogging I read adult fiction much more, but now I kinda got enveloped in the ya frenzy and read adult less, but I've had some great disappoinments in the ya & now I don't really expect a lot when I try a new author. I also was surprised when I started blogging that a lot of people read only ya! I mean, I love ya, but there's just nothing that can replace James Rollins' adult adventures (although I like his Jake Ransom series, too) or Agatha Christie's mysteries, etc. I actually read & love all genres, it just depends on my mood ;) So, as for recommendations, if you haven't tried James Rollins' books, I recommend them a lot! Also, Peter V. Brett's Demon Cycle is really great adult fantasy series, Patrick Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles, Random by Craig Robertson is really good thriller & one of my favorite reads last year, than Karen Rose's books are also really good (I've read only 2 so far, but Silent Scream is probably the best adult book & the best thriller I've read so far this year), Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys was great, too! There are a lot more, but these are some of my favorites that now crossed my mind!

  13. I just reviewed The Lincoln Lawyer on Sunday. Have you read it yet? I enjoyed reading it.

  14. I am so with you! I agree completely! I am feeling a little lost lately in the blog world as I can't find anyone who is reading what I like to read. I am a huge mystery reader - i.e., James Patterson, Tess Gerritsen, Iris Johansen, - as well as a huge series mystery and cozy reader. Please pass along anyone you know who shares these interests!!!!!

  15. While I'm not an avid mystery reader, per se, I absolutely agree with you about the lack of variety in most book review blogs I come across -- which, of course, isn't to say that there aren't some fantastic, well-written YA blogs out there, because there definitely are!

My reviewing interests are as wide and varied as my reading interests, which is to say - vast! Like many of the lovely book reviewers who've already commented on this post, you're likely to find a little of everything at Novel Niche, even among the 16 or so book reviews there right now.

Also, kudos to you on making this post and putting this thought out there :) as you can see, there are definitely others who believe in the beautiful variety of reading!

  16. Well, you already know that we read everything! :) Druing the semester my brain likes YA books because they are generally an easier read but I have a huge stack of other (non-YA) books waiting for summer vacation to come! :D

This is a great idea! I'm always looking for non-YA book blogs. I have found a couple that I love but the same book seem to be reviewed in a lot of different places which sometimes is a bit much lol. I will be checking out all of the links later! :D Thanks Lah! :D

  17. Great idea here! I enjoy the odd YA book but it is hard to find blogs that appeal to other genres.
I linked up my blog (Christa's Hooked on Books)and I said Adult Fiction and Classics. But I also review Science Fiction and Fantasy with some Non-Fiction thrown in here and there. Stop by for something different!

  19. I linked my blog up, too. I'm always excited to find more thriller lovers.

  20. Great topic..I am not a book blogger but I do follow many to get some ideas, read reviews and see what I want to pick up next. I find myself skipped through so many as they are all YA...

  21. @ Aleksandra: Great suggestions! I loved Anansi Boys so I can see that we have the same taste! Will def try Silent Scream first!

  22. This is a good one you got here! I was never really into YA before I started blogging and only discovered those books when I was already establishing contact with other bloggers. There were some really great stories but there are also some that seem to be too repetitive and predictable. It's really great to maintain a balance with all the genres we are reading so we could have a wider range of tastes and experience in reading.
