Couldn't Finish: Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

Nevermore by Kelly Creagh
Cheerleader Isobel has been partnered with goth Varen for a report on Edgar Allan Poe. Unfortunately, this does not sit well with her jock boyfriend Brad, who makes sure to let Varen know who’s boss. Realizing that Brad might not be all she thought he was, Isobel dumps him. Rumors immediately begin circulating that she is in love with Varen, and things heat up while the two are researching their project and Isobel peeks into Varen’s private journal. Suddenly, Isobel is haunted by the ghouls, ghosts, and creepy creatures that inhabit Varen’s dreamworld. Now that she has become a part of this world, Isobel must find a way out, and a way to save Varen.

I was so excited about this book but I got to page 243 and just had to stop. I really gave it the old college try but the problem was that I JUST couldn’t connect with the main character, Isobel.

Isobel’s inner monologue and reactions to the things around her is so obnoxious to me. Additionally, the author could've left out most of the details she gives. I think that if I made it to the end of the book, I’d say it could’ve been shortened at least 200 pages. And length isn't a problem for me, hello HP 1-7 and any James Patterson book. But I need to be spellbound and gripped if I'm going to go for 500 plus pages.

I took a look at a few other reviews on Amazon and see that they agree. Whereas many of my fellow bloggers found this book to be really awesome, it just didn't do it for me! Maybe I will try again some other time but for now, I’m putting Nevermore back on the shelf.

  1. I fully understand where you are coming from. I started 2 books this month that I just couldn't finish, and it is seldom that I don't struggle through a book I've started to read.

  2. Oh that's too bad you didn't manage to connect with the main character .. I've heard so many great things about this book and I'm hoping I'll like it =)

  3. Awww. That's too bad. I sometimes encounter that kind of book. I also love James Patterson. My favorite is the Jester. Sooo goood. I rarely write a bad review, but when I do I also give a second chance for the author to redeem himself/herself. The book looks good though, I mean the cover speaks volumes... :-)

  4. @Ruperto totally agreed! I don't like to give a bad review and I would like to try to read this again since quite a few people liked it!

@Elodie I know! Mixed reviews abound! Hope you like it :)

@Gigi Ann yes! this was the 2nd book this month that I had trouble with

  5. Awww... That's too bad. I do have the same situation. I am really excited about read that certain book but when I was reading it, I held back... It was not what I expected. I declined to provide a review about it and I felt so bad. At least you maybe able to like it when you tried reading that book again! :]

  6. See this is why I wish I were an anonymous book blogger sometimes. As a writer, I pretty much can't give negative reviews (and they say there's no YAMafia :P). So many times I want to thoughtfully critique a book as a way to help other writers even (and sometimes just because a book is so offensive or awful I just have to speak out), but I have to hold my tongue. sigh, politics...

  7. @ Sophia yeah I have an opera blog and i would never put a negative review on there for fear of death.

@ Marrion Yes! I gave a bad review to a book the other day and the author HIMSELF commented. I was mortified!

  8. Sorry to hear that. Not being able to connect with a book's MC is one of the main reasons I stop reading a novel too.

  9. That is such a shame! Nevermore is one of my favourite 2010 debut if not THE favourite! I totally udnerstand though...it's a little boring at the start, very slow but it was totally worth it :) The ending is really good and the romance is to die for! I really hope you find the time to finish it one day ;)

    Cheerios!

  10. Ah. I hate when that happens. I see everyone in the blogosphere raving about a book, and I when I read it, I'm like "... Okay, when does it get awesome???"
I really hope I like this lol. But since I'm picky, I don't know if I will. We'll see :)

  11. Aw, sorry to hear you couldn't get into it. I haven't read it yet, but I'm hoping I like it. You mentioned two things that bother me a lot though: Bad MC and should have 100+ pages removed.

  12. Oh no! I can't believe it! I really liked this one and practically wrote a book on it for my review haha!

I do know where you're coming from though. It was a bit slow to start so I can see how some people can't get into it.

I hope it goes better whenever you decide to give it a second try!
