Couldn’t Finish: Princess in Waiting by Meg Cabot

Princess in Waiting by Meg Cabot
Published: HarperTeen, 2003
Paperback, 256 pages
Borrowed from Library
Stopped Reading at page 100

Omg. This is the book everyone warned me about.

While I was falling in love with the series, I kept getting comments that after the 3 or 4th book, they just stopped reading. I figured maybe I’d at least see what happens. What could be so hard about that? It’s only 224 pages most of the time and sometimes there aren’t even full pages. But this book is really really obnoxious.** Spoiler alert**She goes to Genovia after she finally starts dating Michael and whines about him the whole time. I didn't make it far enough to see what happens. I was probably this boy crazy when I was 14, actually, I definitely was this boy crazy, but I wasn’t as whiny nor did I do as much second guessing as Mia did in this book.
The first person, diary-like writing that was so charming for 3 books in a row, became yawn inducing and teeth-grinding this time around. I had to put it down!

*this post affectionately imitates Small Review’s weekly re-caps where she includes books she can’t make it through.

  1. LOL! I have not read any of these books but I am on page 55 of Once in a Full Moon and it is a slow go. I keep glancing at the other books that I have waiting to be read. Not sure if I will give up on it completely but I want to. I understand how you feel.

  2. I love this series but it gets tedious at some points. Really you can skip to the last three or so and it is good again.

  3. @Truly Bookish: AAAH I hate that!

    @TheBookGatherer: You are welcome!

@Andrea: Thanks for the tip! Because I really do want to finish the series!

  4. Oh no! It's really disappointing to read books that you find you cannot finish, especially those belonging in series. I tried reading A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon but I could not finish it after a few chapters - but I'll be giving it a try again one of these days.

By the way, thanks for dropping by my blog. I know it's sad, I won't be able to collect as much awards as I would love to but I'm too busy right now and can't post as much as I want to. And you're the first person I think of too when I have to give away awards!

  5. Aw, thank you for the note on the bottom. Totally not necessary, but you're such a sweetheart! :)

Sorry you couldn't get through this series! I agree completely. I found the diary entries and Mia's voice really charming and sweet in the first few books. Then she started becoming whiny and annoying. At least you had some good experiences.

Please don't give up on Cabot though! I love her Mediator series.

I appreciate your comments!
