Book Review: The Running Man by Richard Bachman

The Running Man by Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman
Published: 1982
Paperback, 317 pages
Challenge: Dystopian Challenge
Borrowed from Library

The Running Man is set within a dystopian future in which the poor are seen more by the government as worrisome rodents than actual human beings. The protagonist of The Running Man, Ben Richards, is quick to realize this as he watches his daughter, Cathy, grow more sick by the day and tread closer and closer to death. Desperate for money to pay Cathy’s medical bills, Ben enlists himself in a true reality style game show where the objective is to merely stay alive.
I just finished this book on the train. I am completely speechless. I absolutely LOVED IT. It was just my speed and style of writing. The language he used wasn't dumbed down and it wasn't too esoteric. I enjoyed the main character Ben Richards and how Bachman/King didn't allow you to get too close to him. I also enjoyed the very scary, yet very realistic world that he created. Reality tv shows that end in death or exploit people's misfortune are a bigger possibility than they were in 1982 when Bachman/King wrote it.

This book is fast paced and THRILLING! I loved every minute of it. I have never read a book by Stephen King but this was a very cool introduction to his lighter stuff. I recommend this for fans of suspense thrillers, dystopian novels and adult fiction.

  1. I haven't read a Stephen King novel in years....maybe I will pick this one up.

  2. I love this one! As I was reading the Hunger Games it reminded me of it and I want to read this one again, it's been years. Have you read the Hunger Games? You really should!

Thanks for leaving love on my blog! Hogwarts reading challenge fits EVERY Book. If you can't find a category you can throw it in Muggle Studies Category, its the place for those types of books.
