Book Review: The Giver by Lois Lowry

The Giver by Lois Lowry
Bantam Books, 1993
Hardcover, 179 pages
Borrowed from Library
Challenge: Dystopian Challenge

This is my second time reading this masterpiece and I am completely floored. I would like for any of you who haven't read it to read it so I won't include any spoilers here as much as I'm DYING to discuss the book in its entirety.

In Jonas' community, you are given your work position in your Twelfth year. Once he gets the position, truths are revealed to him that will change life as he knows it.

This story could've gone on for chapters and chapters and I wouldn't have minded. I was so enthralled with Jonas' life and his discoveries. The language Lowry used was very clear yet simplistic. I had visceral reactions to all of the shocking moments and began to put myself in the character's shoes. I wish they'd made this a movie...but then again, I don't want them to ruin it.

I highly, highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy soft sci-fi, dystopian novels and thought provoking reads.

  1. The Giver is on my TBR list, but i've avoided it until now cause it pops up on school reading lists and I thought i'd save it till then so I had a good read. BUT alas, you've really made me want to go borrow this from the library. I hadn't realised how short it was till now though. Thanks for the review!!

  2. Good Review!I have never heard of this book but I am going to have to check it out!

  3. I LOVE this book too. I read it in school years ago and I've been in love with it ever since. I read it within a few hours one day. I was just so caught up, I couldn't put it down! I've been trying to get everyone I know to read this book, but they're all like, ' Yes, I'll read it eventually.. '. They just don't understand how great it is! It's awesome to see someone else who appreciates it as much as me!

  4. @ Hilary it's so awesome that you love it too! Seriously I'm going to start a book club with my close friends and tell them the first book is this one hahah! i wish I had read this in school!! i guess it would've been too contemporary though because i was already 10 when it came out!

    @Lisa yes please read it!

    @Night Owl, yeah I had no idea schools read this until after I read it the first time. So yeah, I know what you mean..but this is def one of those rare "the schools got it right" sort of novel haha!

  5. Lois Lowry is one of my favorite authors. She's coming to a bookstore near me in the next month or two and I can't wait to meet her! I love The Giver, did you know she also wrote Gathering Blue and The Messenger which are kind of companion novels to The Giver? They don't necessarily go in order but they kind of relate. You might like those, too. :)

  6. @Mrs. Vincent Yes I know! I think I tired to read Gathering Blue and I didn't like it that much! But I think I will try again this year :)

  7. @Lazy Girl
    I read it in like ...7th grade? I was only 13! That was only a few years ago haha! I was in the honors class and my teacher chose for us to read it! I have been trying to get my book club to read it for years! The cover just turns them of.. haha

    @Mrs. Vincent
    I have Gathering Blue! I haven't read it yet, are they as good as The Giver?

  8. @ Hilary Hahah!! I haven't been 13 for like a really long time hahah. So yep the book came out in 1993 and I was 10 then!! I only WISH my school would've been open minded enough to take a chance on this one!! That's ok though, because now me and my 20 something friends will read it :)

I appreciate your comments!
